The Browns have signed former Cardinals and Eagles CB Roderick Hood. While he played mostly nickel in Philly he seemingly came into his own in Arizona as a starter and was pursued by several teams including St. Louis, Cincinnati and Detroit according to ESPN.
My concern is that he seems to have had a much better 2007 season than 2008 and I would love to know why. Was there a problem with the defense? He didn’t have to adapt to a new defense or coach. Was his decrease in performance due to the same reasons that Arizona Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt let Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast go after last season or was his performance one of the causes of that?
Call me crazy but I would have liked to have seen continued improvement in a second year starter not backsliding. Hopefully, this is the guy we are getting:
Before we get carried away, it is a one year deal. There is no question that Hood can, at the very least, bring depth to a previously thin secondary. They have to be paying him starter money, so presumably he will compete with Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald.
They’re actually getting a little crowded as these three are now joining free agents Hank Poteat and Corey Ivy as well as draft picks Coye Francies and Don Carey. Of course, it only sounds like a lot until you consider all the injuries the Browns have had to contend with the last several years at the position. Seven might be the minimum necessary going into full camp. ;)
Here is hoping this “non-Jet” signing works out.
